Most of us observe from cities, where light pollution hides faint objects. A lot is still possible - and a short trip changes everything.
What works from the city
- The Moon and planets are bright enough that city light hardly matters. They are the best targets from a rooftop.
- Double stars and bright star clusters (the Pleiades, the Beehive) show well.
- The brightest nebulae and galaxies - the Orion Nebula, the core of the Andromeda Galaxy - are visible but faint. Most other galaxies are out of reach.
Getting the most from a rooftop
- Block direct glare from street lights and neighbours' lamps: a corner in shadow, or a cloth screen.
- Avoid heat: hot roofs, water tanks in the sun, air-conditioner exhausts and generators make the air shimmer. A cooler spot on the ground can be sharper.
- Let the telescope cool outside for 30 minutes.
- Observe objects high in the sky - near the horizon you look through more haze and dust.
When the sky is clearest
- October to March usually brings the clearest, steadiest nights across most of the country.
- The monsoon (roughly July to September) brings clouds and humidity, especially in Sindh and Punjab.
- Winter smog and fog in Lahore and much of Punjab (roughly November to January) can hide everything but the Moon and brightest planets.
- Hot summer nights can be hazy with dust in Sindh and southern Punjab.
Dark skies within reach
Light pollution drops sharply about 100 km from a large city. Places Pakistani observers travel to include:
- From Karachi: Kalri (Keenjhar) Lake area, Kirthar range, Gorakh Hill, Hingol and the Makran coast (e.g. Kund Malir).
- From central and southern Punjab: the Cholistan and Thal deserts.
- Sindh: the Thar desert.
- The north: Deosai (reachable roughly June to September), Fairy Meadows, Shandur, the Kaghan and Hunza valleys.
At a dark site the Milky Way is obvious, and galaxies that are invisible from the city appear in modest telescopes.
Safety on trips
Go in a group, tell someone your plan, check weather and road conditions, carry warm clothes for the mountains and water for the desert, and follow local guidance.
