Planet
A small planet that shows detail only for a few months around its close approaches to Earth, which come about every 26 months.
When to look: A few months either side of opposition, roughly every 26 months.
Described as seen by eye at the eyepiece, on a clear night. Photographs collect light for minutes or hours and show far more colour and detail.
City lights do not matter; steady air does.
No real advantage for Mars.
Observing tip: Plan around close approaches. At other times, even large telescopes show little more than a small orange disc.
Rated Good or Excellent for planetary observing by our editors.
